This is waaayyy overdue but I just had to come back here and write this review. If you are searching for the best place to get an engagement ring please continue to read.
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Second of all, you need to at least make one appointment with Keith! Not only he has the best prices/ quality ( and I’m talking about even better than some other countries people fly out to get a diamond ) he also cares about his customers. He made us feel like family and educated us on different types of diamonds and what we should look for. He never made us feel that he just want to sell us the most expensive diamond and he even advised us to make sure on a budget instead of trying to push that budget a bit more like other salesmen do.
He worked so hard for us and rushed our orders since we needed it earlier and went above and beyond. He stayed late to accommodate for of us both working. He made sure we were comfortable and ready to pull the trigger instead of rushing us to make a decision.
I don’t really trust people with any decisions I make nor do I go out of my way to write a review but I just can’t believe people like Keith still exists and I just needed to come here and let you guys know!

Keith has been my family’s jeweler for quite some time now, but this was my first experience using him personally. My partner and I met with him to discuss both of our engagement rings, and we knew immediately we would be using him as our jeweler. Everything was easy and seamless throughout the process, from initial emails and making appointments, to showing diamonds/band options and picking out what we wanted, to putting in final orders and picking up our rings. Keith is very knowledgeable in everything diamond related, and he answered every question that we had (probably more than once!). He was very respectful of our budget and honest in what that budget would get us, and never pressured us into anything. We both ended up with the most beautiful rings that we could have ever asked for, and it was truly a dream working with Keith. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone!!

It’s no wonder why we’re fascinated with diamonds. They have stood the test of time and continue to be the most dazzling and popular of all gemstones.

For guidance we asked Keith Saxe, a nationally known jeweler who is accredited by the Gemological Institute of America and the Fashion Institute of Technology and specializes in certified diamonds, to weigh in on the selection and purchase of diamonds, and how to navigate the complex world of these priceless stones.

Keith Saxe lectures and makes national appearances addressing diamonds.

As a GIA and FIT trained expert for over 34 years, Saxe has served as a trusted second-generation jeweler dedicated to educating consumers. He founded NYC Wholesale Diamonds Inc. His popular blog named “NYC Diamond Blog” can be found at www.NYCDiamondBlog.com and their social media tag “@NextDoorJeweler,” can be found on Instagram and TikTok. A recent post on TikTok attracted over 20 million views. Saxe is accredited by the Diamond Council of America and is also a member of the Jewelers Board of Trade and Jewelers of America.

When purchasing a diamond, Saxe suggests, that you consider the jeweler’s credentials and getting educated and informed. He stated, “I start all of my initial diamond appointments with customers, explaining the need to always protect yourself by following four simple but crucial steps for a successful diamond purchase which includes the following tips.”

%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds

A round diamond is considered one of the most popular and classic.

Tips For Diamond Buying:

1. Only consider GIA certified diamonds which makes your investment verifiable. This is especially important for the integrity of the true value of the diamond as it’s valued over time, but also for reselling a stone at its proper worth and insuring it.
2. It’s also best to only consider diamonds with the GIA number inscribed on the diamond. This is a huge safeguard against a seller misrepresenting the diamond as matching a different GIA Report.
3. Always do your homework. Get referrals and find a jeweler who has a perfect reputation with trusted sources and if they are online, has all five star or near perfect reviews.
4. Secure some version of a full money back guarantee signed by the owner/manager of the business.
Next, regarding the 4 C’s which is how a diamond is evaluated, Saxe shared an easy understanding of how a diamond is graded:

%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds

Princess cut diamond is perfect for lovers of the true square shape.

The 4 C’s:

Color – The goal is finding the whitest diamond possible. D is the best color on the scale, but anything J or above is still wonderful.
Clarity – Find the cleanest diamond possible. Flawless is the best clarity, but SI1 or above is what I advise.
Cut – The trickiest of the four C’s is the cut since GIA only grades the cut for round diamonds. With all other shapes, there’s a concentration more on symmetry and to a lesser extent polish.
Carat Weight – This is also a C that confuses many as carat is measured in weight, not determined by surface area. More research and explanation are necessary to understand how that plays a role with larger sized diamonds.

Marquise cut diamond is ideal for long and thin fingers.

Regarding certification, Saxe stressed the importance of the diamond’s credentials. He stressed, “In our world, the GIA certification is everything. Without a GIA report you will never know what you are purchasing. All too often, we see well-meaning, educated buyers not receive a fair deal without an initial GIA report. The GIA does not buy or sell diamonds. They do not price diamonds and has no relationship with any dealers or stores. They are painfully accurate and always err on the side of caution.”

Saxe agrees now is an excellent time to buy diamonds, as inflationary pressures domestically and around the world point to significantly higher prices ahead. He adds, “Prices are still below pre-COVID levels and always shop around to find the best deal and compare apples to apples (GIA reports).”

Lastly, when asked which shape of a diamond is most valuable and, if that should impact our decision, Saxe shared, “The most important fact to know before buying a diamond is the shape the recipient desires. Round diamonds are the most popular and continue to be the most expensive. All other shapes have lower, and equivalent pricing, but they are all still beautiful and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Your goal should be a quality investment that stands the test of time and most of all, lifelong enjoyment.”

APPRAISAL ADVICE

%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds

NYC Wholesale Diamonds President Keith J. Saxe and his NYC Diamond Blog have featured many articles on the importance of having an accurate appraisal, and insuring your engagement ring. This also holds true for all your valuable jewelry. It is not easy to establish a guideline for the value in which you should begin considering insuring fine jewelry. Every individual situation is unique, but a value of $4,000 for each piece can be accurate in most cases. Another key factor is if the item is worn on a daily basis.
I reached into the archives to post Jim Donovan, Angie’s List 13-time Emmy Award-winning consumer reporter’s wonderful article on this important topic. Here it is, enjoy!
Do you have any valuable pieces of jewelry in your home? When was the last time you had them appraised?
Megan Wright searched all over her house for her missing engagement and wedding rings before finally finding them in her closet.
“My four-year-old daughter had been in there playing dress up — swiped my rings, probably tried them on herself, and she left them in the toe of my shoe,” said Wright.
Fortunately, they were recently appraised, which is important if you want to replicate lost jewelry because appraisals provide detailed descriptions.
“When you want to recreate the piece they’ll be enough detail — the stones, the metal, the weight, the quality of the stones — that you’ll get back exactly what you had. If you have a vague appraisal, then it’s possible you’ll end up with a ring, but it won’t be the same quality or value you had originally,” said jeweler Greg Bires.
You’ll also need an appraisal if you want your jewelry insured.
“Having your jewelry appraised can make sure you have it valued at the correct amount, especially with the fluctuation we’ve seen in gold prices. The pricing and value of your jewelry can and does change over time, so you want to be sure you’ve got it insured for the right amount. If it does end up lost or stolen, you get the right return,” said Angie’s List founder, Angie Hicks.
It’s a good idea to have your items appraised every three to four years. You should expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $65 dollars per item.
More from Angie:
• An appraiser inspects the item to make sure it’s wearable and that there is no damage. The appraisal marks every detail (measurements, number of stones, type of metal, weight, etc.)
• Your appraisal should also include a photograph and a replacement value – what it would cost to recreate the piece.
• An appraiser can help separate the valuable jewelry from the costume jewelry.
The appraisal process:
• Bring in the item, not a picture, for the appraiser to examine.
• Bring the appraiser copies of any sales receipts or other documentation you have about the items being appraised.
• Tell the appraiser anything you know about the item’s origin or where it was purchased.
• The appraiser will then take a few days to research the item’s history and the marketplace.
• You should receive a written report describing the item itself, the reasons for its valuation, and which type of value was done, for example – replacement value, fair market valueor market value.
How do you know what to appraise?
• Costume jewelry/base metal/plated – not worth appraising
• “Real” metal but not expensive – describe and photograph it for your records, but don’t appraise.
• “Real” stones/metal that you couldn’t easily afford to replace within 12 months – get an appraisal and get it insured. If you’d have to save up to replace it, it’s worth the appraisal and insurance rider.
Angie’s List Tips: Hiring an appraiser
Appraising jewelry for resale or insurance can be a challenge. It’s important to know whether a diamond or stone is real in order to get an accurate estimate of value. Some fakes are difficult to spot. Therefore, it’s wise to have a professional appraise any jewelry of value.
• Start by defining your objective: Do you want an appraisal done for insurance purposes? For estate purposes? To find out your piece’s fair market value?
• Work with a jewelry appraiser who has been trained and certified: Ask if the appraiser is certified by such organizations as the Gemological Institute of America and the American Gem Society. Pick someone who has been in the business for a while with a physical address.
• Steer clear of an appraiser who charges a percentage of the appraised value. Hourly fees or flat rates are acceptable. Expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $65 per item. A good appraiser should review all items and establish a rate with the customer before beginning the process. Money saving tip:It can also more cost effective to bring in a number of pieces at once, rather than appraising them individually.
• Appraisals should not take much more than a day, so be wary if the appraiser wants to keep your jewelry much longer than that. Most appraisers recommend making an appointment and will go over your items with you on-site. If you do leave your jewelry, request a receipt that itemizes and describes each piece.
Tips to manage your valuables:
• Preserve your valuables. Have your items cleaned and checked annually.
• Keep the items in their original state. Know that altering a piece may lower its value.
• Consider getting your item re-appraised every three to five years. For items in highly volatile markets, its best to get them re-appraised annually.
• Keep the descriptions of your jewelry in a location separate from the actual jewels. A good place is with your homeowner’s insurance policy. For jewelry handed down through the family, add a description of where the piece came from and keep it with your appraisal information so the next generation can know its significance.

The Importance of a Diamond’s Cut

%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds

NYC Wholesale Diamonds believes that the quality of a diamond’s cut is one of, if not the most, important factors when selecting a diamond.  It seems as if the general public is also reflecting the same opinion.  Rapaport is reporting large price differentials between excellent and average cut fancy shape diamonds.  Shortages of finely cut, large fancy shapes, specifically Pears and Ovals, with large Radiant cut diamonds seeing the biggest increase in demand.
‘Ideal Cut’ is a term used by diamond professionals to mean a diamond cut to proportions that were originally established in the 1919 doctoral dissertation of diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky.  We often think of a diamond’s cut as shape (round, cushion, princess, emerald…), but a diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light.
Cut measures workmanship, rather than a diamond’s inherent qualities. The way a stone is cut enhances sparkle, brilliance, and luminosity.  The GIA’s best cut rating is excellent. This is an extremely desirable and rare distinction only awarded to diamonds that perfectly reflect light. The vast majority of diamonds are actually less than good cuts by GIA standards. This is far from ideal, and there will be a lack of brilliance no matter how large, white, or clean your diamond. It’s appearance in the absence of intense, direct light actually will be dull and lifeless.
Cut determines the sparkle, fire and brilliance of a diamond.
Knowledge on what determines if a diamond is an Ideal Cut, is the key to diamond buying success. The one thing you should not trade off on is the quality of the cut. Even a nice color stone, if not well-cut, will be dull and lifeless. For example, a middle color such as J or K, that has an excellent cut, will pop and shine with all the sparkle that makes diamonds so desirable!
Here, at NYC Wholesale Diamonds, we will spend time educating you on the cut of every diamond we present. GIA grades diamond cut as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. Where it gets complicated, is that GIA only grades cut on round diamonds. All other shapes take more explanation as Polish, Symmetry, Depth and Table percentages come into play, as useful guidelines.

NYCWD has a variety of diamonds, all with Excellent Cut Gradings.  Contact us at (212)719-2214 or Email KS@nycwd.com to set up an appointment time to view
